MILITARY TIME
DEFINITION: MILITARY TIME is based on a twenty-four (24) hour
clock. All times before one P.M. (1:00 or 01:00) are written in
the regular way. For example, ten (10) A.M. is written as
10:00, and expressed verbally as "ten-hundred hours". Eleven (11) A.M.
is written as 11:00 and expressed verbally as "eleven-hundred
hours", etcetera, BUT ALL TIMES AFTER TWELVE (12) NOON (or
"twelve-hundred hours", 12:00) are continued on a twenty-four
hour basis, or twelve (12) noon plus whatever time it is,
rather than started over again from one (1) to twelve (12)
midnight.
FOR EXAMPLE, one (1) P.M. is written as 13:00
(12 + 1 = 13) or expressed verbally as "thirteen-hundred
hours", and two (2) P.M. is written as 14:00 (12 + 2 = 14) and
expressed verbally as fourteen-hundred hours, and so on and so
on until TWELVE (12) MIDNIGHT, which is not written as 24:00
(or expressed verbally as twenty-four hundred hours), but
rather written as 00:00 and expressed as zero-hundred hours.
Some people (mostly those not in the military) do express it
verbally as twenty-four-hundred hours, but that's not
technically correct (at least not officially any way).
THE ONLY ANOMOLY is that a zero is added at the
beginning for times before ten (10) A.M. For example, rather
than write nine (9) A.M. as 9:00 it is written as 09:00. The
zero (0) at the beginning is expressed verbally as either a
"zero" ("zero-nine-hundred hours") or as the letter "o" and
pronounced like the word "oh" or "oh-nine-hundred hours".
