1969 [WED]  Donald Crowhurst disappears during a round-the-world race (Azores)

MAY-21-1969   [WED]

LOCATION:
Atlantic Ocean

WHAT HAPPENED:
Since Donald Crowhurst had decided to let his only competitor win the round-the-world race and instead loiter in the South Atlantic, he sent messages back to London telling them how well he was doing.
When today his only competitor sank somewhere near the Azores and it was now obvious the world would find out how he had lied (plus mix in the failure of his recent business venture) and it's easy to see why his mind would snap like a tight rubberband.

See also, October 31st, the race begins,
                     June 30th, his last message,
and July 11th, his abandoned boat found.
