Yale, in south-central British Columbia, Canada
WHAT HAPPENED:
An alleged gorilla-like humanoid was captured today. A local newspaper referred to it as Jacko. The only surviving local record of the incident was from the Daily Colonist, which described the beast as 4 feet 7 inches tall and weighing 127 pounds. It looked human except for the fact that its whole body was covered with glossy one-inch hair.
There is much evidence that the Daily Colonist made the whole thing up out of whole cloth.
What I also found out was that, depending on the source, the dates are different. The one I've used here comes from my bibliography below.
After doing an intensive search that took a couple days, I actually found a scan of the original article. The link I had for it doesn't work any more, but you can see my archived copy here:

If you study the scan, you'll see that the date of the newspaper was July 4, 1884, but if you read the actual article, WHAT IS IT?: A STRANGE CREATURE CAPTURED ABOVE YALE, it's dated July 3, 1882.

WHAT HAPPENED:
The last radio message from Donald Crowhurst. He is presumed tolast radio message from Donald Crowhurst have fallen overboard (or jumped) sometime between today and the date his boat the Teignmouth Electron was found abandoned by a British freighter.
