WHAT HAPPENED:
Today in 1947, the modern era of the "flying saucer" began.

While flying a plane he owned, Kenneth Arnold spotted nine shiny objects flying near Mount Rainier, Washington. He described them as resembling saucers skipping over water.

A reporter wrote an article using the phrase "flying saucers" to describe the objects, and that is how the phrase originated.
