1924 [SUN] George Leigh-Mallory and Andrew C. Irvine disappear (Mount Everest)
LOCATION:
Mount Everest on the boundary between Nepal and Tibet
WHAT HAPPENED:
While climbing Mount Everest, George Leigh-Mallory and Andrew C. Irvine were less than a thousand feet from the summit when a swirling mist of wind driven snow which hid them from the view of the telescope in the base camp below and were never seen or heard from again.
Since then, both their bodies have been found. Mallory in 1999, and Irvine in 2024.
The summit of Mount Everest was finally and officially reached in 1953, but it's still a wonderfully speculative and interesting possibility that it was reached much earlier in 1924.
