LOCATION:
Cavendish, VT   USA

WHAT HAPPENED:
Phineas P. Gage was packing explosives prior to their detonation using a three foot seven inch iron tamping rod.

For some unexplained reason, the explosives detonated prematurely and pushed the iron rod up through Gage's cheek a little above the jaw and out his brain. He lived for many years afterward only losing sight in his left eye, although friends and relatives reported that he had turned into a lying bully.
