MAY-07-1945   [MON]

LOCATION:
Reims, France

WHAT HAPPENED:
On May 7, 1945, at 2:41 a.m., the German High Command signed the unconditional surrender at a small red schoolhouse in Reims, then known as the Collège Moderne et Technique de Reims, now called Lycée Roosevelt. The surrender was signed by Generaloberst Alfred Jodl on behalf of Germany, with representatives from the Allies including Lieutenant General Bedell Smith for the United States and Major General Ivan Susloparov for the Soviet Union. The surrender officially came into force on May 8, 1945, at 11:01 p.m., celebrated as Victory in Europe (VE) Day.
