1897 [SAT] Louisa, the wife of Adolph Louis Luetgert, was last seen alive (Chicago, Illinois USA)
LOCATION:
Chicago, Illinois USA
WHAT HAPPENED:
Louisa, the wife of Adolph Louis Luetgert (owner of a Chicago factory on the corner of Hermitage and Diversey), was last seen alive today in 1897.
Louisa's brother Dietrich noticed she was missing on May 4th. After a few days of fruitless inguiries, he called in the police. They investigated and finally charged Luetgart with murder.
The prosecution contended that he dissolved his wife's body down into soap by using an excoriating brew made in a sausage vat from 325 pounds of caustic potash.
Adolph was eventually convicted of murder (by a second jury) on February 9, 1898.
He died, while his case was on appeal, from fatty degeneration of the heart on July 27, 1899 while in Joliet State Penitentiary in Joliet, Illinois USA.
An interesting side note to the case is the current story going around that Luetgert killed his wife Louisa by stabbing her and sending her body through a sausage grinder, eventually using her remains to make sausage. Another story going around is that Luetgert died in prison in 1911.
With further investigation, instigated by an e-mail I received from the alleged great grandson of Adolph Luetgert who chastised me on the accuracy of my original entry, I have found that none of these current stories are verifiable.
